The Journey

Saying that this has been a journey is an understatement.  We are incredibly proud of what we have built and excited to share this unique experience with everyone.

Where It began
An idea was born
The property covered in snow

Linda found a 4-acre property just outside of Kakabeka Falls. It’s safe to say we took a bit of a leap of faith with this one. We did our homework on zoning and property lines, but not knowing exactly what was hiding under all that snow was a little nerve-racking.

What's under the snow?
Let's see what we bought

The snow finally melted — well, most of it — and we were finally able to walk the property. Before we could really explore, though, we had to track down the physical property markers.

Remember saying, “I’m never going to use math in real life” as a kid? Turns out, we definitely did. Using municipal drawings, angles, measurements, Google Maps pins, and Google Earth coordinates, we managed to locate the markers and put together an accurate site drawing. So yes… math actually was important after all.

With that done, we were able to submit the required documents and secure both the building permit and MTO permit.

Lot's of wood
The real work started

We spent a significant amount of time clearing fallen trees and wood debris from the property. Unfortunately, a fire ban was in place at the time — otherwise we probably could have hosted our own little “Burning Man” festival.

Officially, we were still waiting for the permits to be approved, so we kept ourselves busy researching outhouses, solar systems, and having some very real conversations about building the deck. At that point, it was becoming clear that we might have to build most of this ourselves.

Next hurdle… the Conservation Authority.

So grateful for power tools
We have a dome

All of the permits were finally approved, and with Brian’s help, we started building the 40′ x 40′ deck. We definitely got schooled along the way, but it was amazing watching it all come together piece by piece.

Next came the dome. Let’s just say this giant Meccano set was nowhere near as simple as the videos made it look. But with a little help from family and friends, we eventually got the 26′ dome standing tall.

Doing what we can before the snow

The door, interior studs, and electrical all started coming together, and the deck railing was finally installed. We also spent more time clearing debris and spreading 20 truckloads of pitrun around the property.

Remember those massive piles of wood? While it never quite turned into “Burning Man,” we definitely roasted more than a few marshmallows along the way.

Summer 2024
Lots of little things completed
Heat and solar power

Work slowed down over the winter months, but as the temperatures started to rise again, so did the pace of the project. Flooring and drywall were installed, the outhouse was built, and both the pellet stove and solar system were finally installed and tested.

We are almost there!
Almost there

Lots of work has been completed on the inside of the dome.  Its a beautiful and cozy space.

Ready to go!
The Dome is ready for rental

It had been quite the journey, but the dome was finally ready for guests to enjoy the space. We added a few final touches along the way, including an outdoor shower for the summer months, a ceiling fan, and extra seating to relax and take in the outdoors.
